The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Position That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Since my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the canteen, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately told my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his full name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
