A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying such medications must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
