The tally of fatalities due to the freight aircraft that burst into flames and crashed has risen to 13, per latest announcements.
Mayor's Remarks
Traveling to the Workers’ candlelight gathering, I received word of a 13th person that passed away as a consequence of the UPS flight 2976 incident,” wrote the city mayor in a social media post. “My prayers is with the families, friends and colleagues of all who were killed in this week’s calamity. We will endure this together.”
Victims Named
A statement from the carrier listed the officers operating the jet as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.
“Our sympathies go out to all UPSer who has been impacted and everyone in our Louisville region – assisting you and making sure you receive the care and assistance you need is our focus,” the organization’s statement read.
Probe Updates
National authorities disclosed that the UPS cargo plane’s port side wing ignited and an engine detached shortly after departure from the Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport, leading to the jet to plummet and burst into a fireball.
The safety agency stated it is examining the plane’s service record, that was in the state for maintenance a period before the incident.
Aircraft data indicated the jet was on the tarmac in the Texas city from early September to mid-October.
“We are aware that this aircraft was there in San Antonio,” said an NTSB member on later, not giving a specific period. “We will look at every piece of maintenance that was performed, including the San Antonio time, right up to the time of the flight.”
Findings of Critical Items
The pilot’s recorder and information unit were recovered, and the motor was discovered on the tarmac.
The recorders – known as data containers – were designed to withstand crash impacts and severe heat from blazes, and they looked to be undamaged when found amid the remains. Authorities intend to reviewing information from the devices.
Jet’s final data recordings showed an altitude of 475 feet and a rate of 210 miles per hour prior to the impact.
Repair Record
Per Federal Aviation Administration files dated that date, a fissure on a component in the tank area demanded maintenance.
Headquartered in Singapore ST Engineering, which stated it provides airframe maintenance for UPS’s jet and operates a service location in San Antonio, refused to comment, but said it would assist completely when officials contacted it.
Operations Resume
At the same time, UPS Worldport services restarted last night with its Next Day Air or nighttime process, spokesperson Jim Mayer stated. All three runways at the airport were also back in operation.
The UPS package handling facility in this location is the organization’s largest. The facility hires over a large number of individuals in the locality, handles 300 trips per day and organizes in excess of four hundred thousand items an hour.
Local Response
A candlelight vigil was conducted on the evening of that date by the area Teamsters Union, which acts for staff at the airfield, the company’s largest shipping facility.
Worker representatives, which stands for UPS workers, started the vigil with a period of reflection at the evening hour, the rough moment of the incident before.
“This event was so unexpected, so unexpected,” the leader spoke to the crowd of attendees. “No one had a opportunity to part to any one of those who we have mourned.”
